Denmark Seizes Bank In Bid To Revamp, Sell It

Denmark seized control of Fionia Bank A/S Monday by injecting about one billion Danish kroner, or about $172 million, in a deal that will take away shareholder control and split the bank into two parts until a sale can be realized.'This is not liquidation, but a strengthening of our ability to operate the bank,' Fionia Chief Executive Jorgen Bast said.Fionia, a regional bank in Denmark's Funen and Triangle region of Jutland with more than 90,000 customers, was hit by mounting losses on bad loans to property developers. Housing values in the country have plummeted after a decade of booming prices.The bank's nationalization is Denmark's third since autumn, when the state took over Roskilde Bank A/S and Ebh Bank A/S after they failed to find buyers willing to take on their soaring write-downs on loans to the real-estate industry. About 10 other banks, hit by similar afflictions, have been ushered into private mergers.Fionia's shares, which have lost 76% of their value in the past 12 months, were suspended before market opening, although the bank will keep its listing for now.The deal means the bank's shareholders will lose control of the company for a while, but retain ownership, Mr. Bast said. 'The control can be retained after the agreement, if the bank succeeds in creating enough positive results to return and repay the capital.'As part of the deal, Denmark will inject one billion kroner into Fionia through its financial-stability vehicle to strengthen the bank's capital solvency to 13% from 8.3% at the end of December.
