Q: Given a sorted integer array and a number, find all the pairs that sum up to the number. What if the array is sorted by absolute value, for example {1, -2, 4, -9}, find the answer in O(N).
A:
9.
Q: Given an array A, output another array B such that B[k]=product of all elements in A but A[k]. You are not allowed to use division.
P[i]=A[1]*A[2]*...*A[i],Q[i]=A[n]*A[n-1]*...*A[i]。于是,B[i]=P[i-1]*Q[i+1]。
10.
Q: You are given a string e.g."face" and a set of mutation rules, e.g. a->@, e->3, e-E. Print all the possible strings that can be generated b y the rules, e.g. f@c3, fac3, etc.
A: 和求Combinations类似. result list中先放入face 然后看a->@ 将result list中所有能变化的结果加入到list中.
Q: Design an algorithm to find whether a given string is formed by the interleaving of two given strings or not. e.g. s1= aabccabc s2= dbbabc s3= aabdbbccababcc Given s1,s2,s3 design an efficient algorithm to find whether s3 is formed from the interleaving of s1 and s2.

12.
写一个版本算法复杂度O(N^2)和一个O(N). Write a function f(a, b) which takes two character string arguments and returns a string containing only the characters found in both strings in the order of a. Write a version which is order N-squared and one which is order N.

Q: Given an array, find the longest subarray which the sum of the subarray less or equal than the given MaxSum. int[] FindMaxSumArray(int[] array, int maxsum) for example, given array: {1, -2, 4, 5, -2, 6, 7} maxsum=7 the result would be: {1,-2, 4, -2, 6}
A: 与Maximum Subarray Problem不同
private static int findMinDiff(int[] input) {
int[] input2 = new int[input.length - 1];
for (int i = 0; i < input.length - 1; i++)
input2[i] = input[i] - input[i + 1];
return minSum(input2);
}
private static int minSum(int[] input) {
int current = input[0];
int min = Math.abs(input[0]);
for (int i = 1; i < input.length; i++) {
current = current + input[i];
if (current <= 0) {
if (current < min)
min = current;
} else
current = 0;
}
return min;
}

Q: You are given with three sorted arrays (in ascending order), you are required to find a triplet (one element from each array) such that distance is minimum. Distance is defined like this: If a[i], b[j] and c[k] are three elements then distance=max(abs(a[i]-b[j]),abs(a[i]-c[k]),abs(b[j]-c[k])) Please give a solution in O(n) time complexity
Point to the first elements of the three arrays, namely a[0],b[0],c[0]. Find the smallest and second smallest of the three.Let us say that a[0] is the smallest and b[0] is the second smallest. Increment the pointer of a until you find a[i]>b[0]. Calculate the difference between a[i-1] and c[0] and store it as current min. Now,again find the smallest and second smallest between a[i], b[0], and c[0] and repeat the above process. If the new difference is smaller than current min,update the value of current min. Repeat the above process until one of the arrays are finished.
17.
Q: given n strings with equal length, say x. find the substring shared by all of them. For example, abcx, abdx, abea, then ab is shared by all of them.
A: suffix tree can achieve O(k^2*n), Rabin-Karp can achieve O(k*n^2), where k = # of strings & n = length of string
Given a read only array of size n each of which is a number between 1 to n-1 inclusive, find any element which is present more than once in the array in linear time and constant space. E.g. 2 1 2 3 5 3.
A: static void findDupBitwise(int[] input) {
int checker = 0;
for (int i = 0; i < input.length; ++i) {
int val = input[i];
if ((checker & (1 << val)) > 0) {
System.out.print(input[i] + " ");
continue;
}
checker |= (1 << val);
}
}
19.
Q: You are given a bit array (i.e each element is 0 or 1) A[1..n]. A bit array is called balanced if the number of times 01 appears is same as the number of times 10 appears. By 01 appearing we mean that A[i] = 0 and A[i+1] = 1 for some i. i.e. S1 = { i : A[i] = 0 and A[i+1] = 1} S2 = {j : A[j] = 1 and A[j+1] = 0} The array is balanced if number of elements in S1 is same as number of elements in S2. Eg: A = [1,0,1] is balanced. A = [0,0,0,0,0,0] is balanced too. Give an algorithm to determine if a bit array A[1...n] is balanced.
A: <http://discuss.techinterview.org/default.asp?interview.11.748329.13>
balanced = not (xor(b[0], b[n-1]))

A: <http://fayaa.com/tiku/view/109/>
22.
Q: You are given two arrays, say A: {4, 1, 6, 2, 8, 9, 5, 3, 2, 9, 8, 4, 6} B: {6, 1, 2, 9, 8}, where B contains elements which are in A in consecutive locations but may be in any order. Find their starting and ending indexes in A. (Be careful of duplicate numbers).
A: <http://discuss.techinterview.org/default.asp?interview.11.791522.25>
static List list = new ArrayList();
static int findStartIndex(int[] a, int[] b) {
for (int i = 0; i < a.length; i++) {
if ((a.length - i) > b.length) {
int hash = a[i];
for (int j = 1; j < b.length; j++)
hash ^= a[i + j];
list.add(hash);
}
}
int bhash = b[0];
for (int i = 1; i < b.length; i++)
bhash ^= b[i];
for (int i = 0; i < list.size(); i++)
if (list.get(i).equals(bhash))
return i;
return -1;
}
Q: How to sort an array with only {0, 1, 2} possible values in O(n) without extra space(意思就是说不能用counting sort)? Ex: an array {0, 1, 2, 2, 1, 0}
24.
Q: given a string, how to do a string rotation without using extra memory?
Identify the character you want to be at the front of the string after the rotation. Then divide the string into two halves such that this character is the first character in the second half. Reverse each half in place, then reverse the resulting string.
25.
Q: Find out if two inputs are Anagrams with HUGE HUGE input (like thousand of terabyte)
Use hash. A good way to design the key is to sort the characters in the word, and then combine any duplicated chars, for example, the key to "anagram" will be: "a3g1m1n1r1". This can be generated using a counting array(in counting sort) in O(m+n) -> m is size of counting array and n is size of anagram str. Insertion into hashtable is therefore O(m+n) and lookup is the same O(m+n) since we need to key the incoming anagram to lookup in hashtable. For each word in the dictionary, sort the letters alphabetically. So "foobar" becomes "acfoor." Then when the input anagram comes in, sort its letters too, then look it up. It's as fast as a hashtable lookup! For multiple words, you could do combinations of the sorted letters, sorting as you go. Still much faster than generating all combinations.
26.
Q: Given two arrays of numbers, find if each of the two arrays have the same set of integers? Suggest an algo which can run faster than NlogN without extra space?
27. (有意思) keyword: 7 letters
A: 对每个单词,求一个int值,使用出现的字母来set该int对应的bit位,如‘a’,就set 第0位为1。然后将所有有同样int的单词存成pair <int, vector<string> >的形式,并将vector内string按length排序。query时,将7个字母mark出一个int值(q)。依次和每个key做&运算(相信这个速度更快),如果q==q&key,(means key里有那7个字母),则记录该pair的second项的最后一个string,和当前最长的比较。 所有pair比较完,就得到了解。这个应该是sublinear的。其实,pair的第二项可以只存该类最长的单词。如果包括大写字母,可以用long long来代替int。 或者 words[n][26] n is number of words in dictionary. Then each entry words[i][j] is 1 if words[i] contains letter[j].
Implement the function bool isRegex(char *reg, char *string); This function is passed two strings : a regular expression, consisting of the [a-z] and the * and ? characters. We had to check if the string matched the supplied regular expression. For example, if reg is a*b, and string is acbcb, we should return true. And if reg is a?b and string is accb, we return false.
<http://mach.debagua.com/archives/2010/0416_001117.html>
Match[i,j] = Match[i-1, j-1], if x[i] = ’?’
= Match[i-1, 1..j]中任何一个等于true, if x[i]=’*’
= Match[i-1, j-1] and (x[i] = s[j]), if x[i]不是通配符
Match[0,0] = true,
Match[i,0] = Match[i-1,0], if x[i] = ’*’
= false, otherwise
30.
Q: dictionary is given. You have a word which may be misspelled. How will you check if it is misspelled?
A: Trie
Q: Write to find the 2nd duplicate substring in a string.
A: 后缀树
32. (难点 ExternalSort)
Q: Given N integers which are unsorted and are stored in disk. You have a computer with a very limited memory of size k. i.e You can only perform operations on k integers at a time among the N. Also k<<<<N. Now, find the median among the N integers.

Q: Given an array of n integers, such that each number in the array appears exactly twice, except for three numbers (say a, b and c) which appear exactly once. In O(n) time and O(1) space find a,b and c. The input array is read-only.
34.
Q: You have an int array of size unknown(infinite), how will you do binary search over it? The array is sorted.
A: <http://discuss.techinterview.org/default.asp?interview.11.791047.4>
start with number at position 1 (0-based). If it's smaller than our search, then double this position. Once we get the value greater than we're looking for, do a regular binary search in the range from currentPosition/2 to currentPosition.
Q: Divide a list of numbers into groups of consecutive numbers but their original order should be preserved. Example: <8,2,4,7,1,0,3,6> Two groups: <2,4,1,0,3> <8,7,6>
A: <http://discuss.techinterview.org/default.asp?interview.11.770712.8> <http://www.careercup.com/question?id=65732>
sort the input array in some other same size list. Travel through that array to find the boundaries of consecutive groups.After a boundary is found travel through the original array and put the numbers in that range in the sorted array. Traverse through the array starting from the beginning and put the first element in one list(create new). Get second and put it in the same list if it is +/-1 from the last number inserted in any list else create a new one and put it their. Merge the lists formed into clearly demarcated lists.
Index sort
It is easy. You use a technique called "index sorting", C#, Java, etc. all have overloads of the sort call which can tandem sort two arrays. So essentially you have two arrays
int[] numbers = {5, 7, 8, 2, 9, 3} or whatever
int[] indices = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
sort indices and numbers by the elements in numbers.
numbers = {2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9}
indices = {3, 5, 0, 1, 2, 4}
Then divide numbers/indices into consecutive groups, which is easy. Resort numbers/indices but sort by indices. Then just walk through numbers printing out the values.
Q: This question was asked in Amazon interview. (Please do bear with my wordings) Given a set of N numbers(N being even), the task is to divide the numbers into 2 equal groups(N/2 each), such that the difference in sum between the two groups is minimal.

Q: Find all palindromes in a string

Q: 给定一个字符串的集合,格式如:{aaa bbb ccc}, {bbb ddd},{eee fff},{ggg},{ddd hhh},将其中交集不为空的集合合并,要求合并完成后的集合之间无交集。例如上例应输出{aaa bbb ccc ddd hhh}, {eee fff}, {ggg}
A: <http://fayaa.com/tiku/view/31/>

Q: Given a string, figure out how many characters minimum are needed to make the word a palindrome.
A: <http://stackoverflow.com/questions/903176/how-do-i-figure-out-the-least-number-of-characters-to-create-a-palindrome>
function isPalindrome(s):
i1 = 0
i2 = s.length() - 1
while i2 > i1:
if s.char_at(i1) not equal to s.char_at(i2):
return false
increment i1
decrement i2
return true
Try that with the full string. If that doesn't work, save the first character on a stack then see if the remaining characters form a palindrome. If that doesn't work, save the second character as well and check again from the third character onwards.
Eventually you'll end up with a series of saved characters and the remaining string which is a palindrome.
Best case is if the original string was a palindrome in which case the stack will be empty. Worst case is one character left (a one-character string is automatically a palindrome) and all the others on the stack.
The number of characters you need to add to the end of the original string is the number of characters on the stack.
43.
Q: Write C code to implement the strstr (Search for a substring) function. Do not use any system library such as strlen.
A: <http://www.ihas1337code.com/2010/10/implement-strstr-to-find-substring-in.html>
char* StrStr(const char *str, const char *target) {
if (!*target) return str;
char *p1 = (char*)str;
while (*p1) {
char *p1Begin = p1, *p2 = (char*)target;
while (*p1 && *p2 && *p1 == *p2) {
p1++;
p2++;
}
if (!*p2)
return p1Begin;
p1 = p1Begin + 1;
}
return NULL;
}
44.

Output: the kth largest sum(a+b) possible. where a (any element from array 1) and b (any element from array 2)
A[] = (15,10,9,7,5,3,2,1)
B[] = (20,17.13,8,6,4,3,0)
A'[] = (35,30,29,27,25,23,22,21)
B'[] = (35,32,28,23,21,19,18,15)

Q: You are given an array of 0s and 1s in random order. Segregate 0s on left side and 1s on right side of the array. Traverse array only once. [Dutch National Flag Problem]
A: <http://geeksforgeeks.org/?p=5234>
方法1
1) Count the number of 0s. Let count be C.
2) Once we have count, we can put C 0s at the beginning and 1s at the remaining n – C positions in array.
方法2
a) Keep incrementing index left while there are 0s at it
b) Keep decrementing index right while there are 1s at it
c) If left < right then exchange arr[left] and arr[right]

Q: Given an array A[] consisting 0s, 1s and 2s, write a function that sorts A[]. The functions should put all 0s first, then all 1s and all 2s in last.
A: <http://geeksforgeeks.org/?p=8133>
static void sort012(int[] a) {
int lo = 0;
int hi = a.length - 1;
int mid = 0;
while (mid <= hi) {
switch (a[mid]) {
case 0:
int c = lo++;
int d = mid++;
a[c] = a[c] ^ a[d];
a[d] = a[c] ^ a[d];
a[c] = a[c] ^ a[d];
break;
case 1:
mid++;
break;
case 2:
int e = hi--;
a[mid] = a[mid] ^ a[e];
a[e] = a[mid] ^ a[e];
a[mid] = a[mid] ^ a[e];
break;
}
}
}
Time Complexity: O(n)

Q: Given 2 sorted arrays A and B each of size N,find the combined median of A and B?
A: <http://geeksforgeeks.org/?p=2105>
1) Calculate the medians m1 and m2 of the input arrays ar1[] and ar2[] respectively.
2) If m1 and m2 both are equal then we are done. return m1 (or m2)
3) If m1 is greater than m2, then median is present in one of the below two subarrays.
a) From first element of ar1 to m1 (ar1[0...|_n/2_|])
b) From m2 to last element of ar2 (ar2[|_n/2_|...n-1])
4) If m2 is greater than m1, then median is present in one of the below two subarrays.
a) From m1 to last element of ar1 (ar1[|_n/2_|...n-1])
b) From first element of ar2 to m2 (ar2[0...|_n/2_|])
4) Repeat the above process until size of both the subarrays becomes 2.
5) If size of the two arrays is 2 then use below formula to get the median.
Median = (max(ar1[0], ar2[0]) + min(ar1[1], ar2[1]))/2

Q: Given a string of lowercase characters, reorder them such that the same characters are at least distance d from each other. Input: { a, b, b }, distance = 2 Output: { b, a, b }
A: <http://www.ihas1337code.com/2010/05/here-is-another-google-phone-interview.html>
The solution below involves a greedy strategy, that is: The character that has the most duplicates has the highest priority of being chosen to put in the new list. If that character cannot be chosen (due to the distance constraint), we go for the character that has the next highest priority. We also use some tables to improve the efficiency. (i.e., keeping track of # of duplicates of each character.)
int find_max(int freq[], bool excep[]) {
int max_i = -1;
int max = -1;
for (char c = 'a'; c <= 'z'; c++) {
if (!excep[c] && freq[c] > 0 && freq[c] > max) {
max = freq[c];
max_i = c;
}
}
return max_i;
}

Q: Given an integer, print the closest number to it that is a palindrome - eg, the number "1224" would return "1221".
A: <http://www.careercup.com/question?id=237693>
- Convert the number into string. (1224, 39999)
- take half of the string. ( "12", "399" )
- copy first half to second half in reverse order (take care of no of chars)
( "12" -> "1221", "399" -> "39993" )
- convert to number and measure the abs. difference with original number - diff1
( |1221 - 1224| = 3, |39993-39999| = 6)
- add 1 to half string and now copy first half to second half in reverse order
( 12+1 = 13, 399 + 1 = 400, 13-> 1331, 400->40004)
- convert to number and measure the abs. difference with original number - diff2
( |1331-1224| = 107, |40004-39999| = 5 )
- if diff1<diff2 return first number else return second number
( 1221, 40004)

Q: Suppose a sorted array is rotated at some pivot unknown to you beforehand. (i.e., 0 1 2 4 5 6 7 might become 4 5 6 7 0 1 2). How do you find an element in the rotated array efficiently? 同问题 binary search circular array.
A: <http://www.ihas1337code.com/2010/04/searching-element-in-rotated-array.html>
First, we know that it is a sorted array that's been rotated. Although we do not know where the rotation pivot is, there is a property we can take advantage of. Here, we make an observation that a rotated array can be classified as two sub-array that is sorted (i.e., 4 5 6 7 0 1 2 consists of two sub-arrays 4 5 6 7 and 0 1 2.
Do not jump to conclusion that we need to first find the location of the pivot and then do binary search on both sub-arrays. Although this can be done in O(lg n) time, this is not necessary and is more complicated.
We don't care where the pivot is, we just know it is somewhere. Look at the middle element of the array. It is the element 7. Compare it with the left most and right most element. 7 is greater than 4, and is also greater than 2. From this information, we can deduce if the pivot is located in the lower or upper half.
Since 7 (middle element) is greater than 4 (left element), the pivot must not located between the left index and the middle index. (i.e., the pivot must be in the upper half). Therefore, from left element to middle element, the series must be in the increasing order, and if the key we are looking for is between those two elements, we look in the lower half. If not, we look in the upper half.
So when does it stops? Luckily, it is the same as binary search; that is, when left index is greater than right index.
int rotated_binary_search(int key, int A[], int L, int R) {
if (L > R) return -1;
// Avoid overflow, same as M=(L+R)/2
int M = L + ((R - L) / 2);
if (A[M] == key) return M;
if (A[M] >= A[L]) {
if (key < A[M] && key >= A[L])
R = M - 1;
else
L = M + 1;
} else {
if (key > A[M] && key <= A[R])
L = M + 1;
else
R = M - 1;
}
return rotated_binary_search(key, A, L, R);
}
<http://hi.baidu.com/mianshiti/blog/item/4a477f819adf94ae0cf4d28f.html>
首先比较a[0]和a[N/2],如果a[0] < a[N/2],则说明a[0,1,...,N/2]为递增子序列,否则另一部分是递增子序列。

Q: Write a function to check if two strings are anagrams. Write a function to find all possible anagrams of a given string. You are given a method isWord() to check if the string is a valid word in a dictionary. Assuming that preprocessing can be done what preprocessing will u do in order to speed up the process of finding anagrams.
A: <http://www.careercup.com/question?id=183823>
For finding all possible anagrams: I'd preprocess the dictionary by sorting letters in each word. Such a sorted word would be a key in a map where the value is the list of original words being anagrams of the key. Finding all anagrams of a word consists of sorting the word, making a lookup and retrieving the list.

Q: Given a string and print the words which have the same exact letters. Space is the only separator. For example, abc bbe bca derwe eeb, it will print abc bca. abc bbe abcd derwe eeb will print nothing.
A: <http://www.careercup.com/question?id=65675>
Basically, this question is to find all anagrams in a given sentence.
I'll present only the idea here:
(1) for each word generate a key- for eg., for eeb, the key is "bee", i.e., sorted. The sorting takes o(n) time, where n is the length of the word. This can be achieved by using a count array of size 26 (assuming only a-z), where each slot gives how many times an alphabet occurs.
(2) After computing the key, add it to a hash map, where the key is the above key, and value is the list of words (or a pointer to it). Add the word to the value list for this key.
(3) After repeating (2) for each word in the sentence, iterate the hash map, and for each key such that the value list has more than 1 element, print the list.
SPACE: O(len) where len is the number of characters. Basically this space is needed for the hash map. But typically hash maps from library preallocate space, so the actual space used depends on the library characteristics.
TIME: O(len). this is because keys are generated on the fly while traversing the sentency from left to right. The count array is reset at the start of the next word, which is after a space.

Q: Design an algorithm to find whether a given string is formed by the interleaving of two given strings or not.
s1= aabccabc
s2= dbbabc
s3= aabdbbccababcc
Given s1,s2,s3 design an efficient algorithm to find whether s3 is formed from the interleaving of s1 and s2.
A: <http://www.careercup.com/question?id=2571>
Here is the idea behind getting an algorithm in O(m+n), where m and n are the lengths of the two strings s1 and s2, such that s1+s2+s3, where + represents this strange concatenation.
Imagine a matrix with m columns and n rows. each column is labeled by a symbol in string s1, and each row is labeled by a character in string s2. If you draw it, look at where the vertical lines intersect the horizontal lines, and call these points. These intersections are the points of interest. The question becomes: if you start in the upper left point and you can only go right and down, can you reach the lower right corner? A move is valid only if the segment corresponding to the current character is the character in s3. If you start labeling the points with true if you can reach that point and with false otherwise (exploring false points is not interesting). First, label all the top points, then all the left points. Now start labeling the second row of points (left to right), then the next row, and so on.
If you can label the lower right point with true, them s1+s2=s3. Note that to actually find the correct interleaving, you need an auxiliary structure with back pointers.

Q: Given that you have one string of length N and M small strings of length L . How do you efficiently find the occurrence of each small string in the larger one ?
A: <http://placementsindia.blogspot.com/2007/12/solutions-to-few-google-top-interview.html>
This solution has been framed on the assumption that all the occurances of a string in the large string of length N are to be reported.
So one can just sort the M strings in O(l*Mlog(M)).An additional l figures because comparison function of strings of length l is of complexity O(l).
Once these M strings are sorted,we can simply do a binary search on them for each of the N-l+1 continuous substrings of big string.The complexity of this search for each such substring is O(l*logM).
So the complexity of this procedure is O(l*MlogM)+O((N-l+1)*(l*logM)).
For N>>l this reduces to O(l*MlogM)+O(N*l*log(M).
This can be reduced to O((M+N)*l*log(M)).
