Should Universities in China Expand Their Enrollment
In the past several years, universities in China have been greatly expanding their enrollment. More and more students, most of whom have long dreamed of entering college, have now been accepted as college students. As far as this issue is concerned, people vary in their views.
Proponents base their views on the following reasons: first of all, a population of more well-educated people is very important to the country’s quickly developed economy. The economic development is becoming more and more dependent on the development of science and technology, which is greatly and sometimes, directly influenced by university education. So by expanding the enrollment, the country, will have greater number of people with advanced education, which will probably promote its economic growth. Secondly, a population of more well-educated people is of great importance to the stability of the society. It is widely accepted that people with better education may deal with problems more rationally. Quarrels and fights seldom break out between college graduates. Conversely, a simple disagreement between two people without enough education may simply give birth to a serious fight because they have no other choices. Opponents argue that colleges and universities’ expansion may have some negative effects on them. Firstly, expanding their enrollment may lead to the shortage of classrooms and teachers, which will undoubtedly affect their teaching quality. Secondly, it may lead to the shortage of dormitories, which will affect their students’ living conditions.
In my opinion, despite the fact that there are some criticisms, the expansion of enrollment should not affect those colleges and universities greatly. In order to avoid the detrimental effect that may be probably led to by the irrational expansion, we should try our best to find solutions to this series of problems and ensure our teaching quality.
